Luristan Bronze Spearhead (No Reserve Price)

A finely cast Luristan bronze spearhead. The piece features a long leaf-shaped blade with a central midrib, and a short, flattened tang. The surface is covered with an attractive patination with some earth encrustations remaining. There are some small chips along the edges of the blade and the surface. Luristan bronzes come from the province of Lorestan, located in modern day Iran. Luristan weapons, such as this nice example, would have been used in everyday life but also buried together with the deceased. Excavated items from this region often include weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Ornamental objects are also frequently found, such as pins and bracelets. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Luristan bronze objects often serverd ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts. Weapons, such as this nice example, would have been used in everyday life but also buried together with the deceased. Measurements: L 16.4 cm x W 2.1cm Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990 - present.
