Chikuma Shobo/1972/Japanese/64×46.5cm
Chikuma Photo Gallery, a series of poster-sized photographs published from 1971 to 1972. Eight people who seem to represent the history of postwar Japanese photography participated in the series: Hiroshi Hamaya, Kishin Shinoyama, Yoshikazu Shirakawa, Yoichi Midorikawa, Taikichi Irie, Yoshihiro Tachiki, Kazutaka Narahara, and Eikoh Hosoe. This book, "Otoko to Onna (Male and Female)," by Hosoe, who served as the trio, consists of 12 illustrations, including excerpts from his first photo book of the same name. This work, created over the course of a year from 1959 to 1960 while Hosoe was a member of "VIVO," a group of photographers formed with Shomei Tomatsu and Kazutaka Narahara, was shown at his second solo exhibition and was the winner of the New Photography Critics Award from the Japan Photo Critics Society. Since "Chikuma Photo Gallery" is a collection of self-selected works, Hosoe states in this book that he is "unusually attached to this work. Butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, his disciples, and female models participated in the exhibition. The graceful curves of the women and the muscular arms of the men, the nude bodies of men and women are composed like objects, captured in deep black and white contrasts, and the photographic expression is more vivid when viewed in large format.
