Diminutive mask - Kifwebe - Songye - DR Congo (No Reserve Price)

The political organization of the Songye is based on the authority of a chief, considered the holder of sacred powers. His religious and magical power is associated with two secret societies. The first practices magic and witchcraft, known as bash masende. The second, which depends directly on it, relies on the powers of the bwadi bwa kifwebe and its use of ritual masks, recognizable by their parallel, curvilinear, or straight stripes, highlighted with alternating colors. The term "songye kifwebe" generically means "mask" and applies to several different types, characterized by the treatment of the eyes with semi-closed eyelids and facial stripes. These stripes may evoke an animal, perhaps the striped bongo antelope, or symbolically represent the twists and turns of male initiation trials. The bifwebe (plural of kifwebe) are usually worn in pairs during dances depicting the spirits of the dead, both men and women, supernatural forces, and mysterious beings. Due to the Cubist stylization of the faces, as well as the graphic aspect of the patterns, these masks, which have become one of the most famous typologies of African art, remain mysterious. This diminutive votive mask is remarkably carved, with symmetry and dynamism. Its small crest, large almond-shaped eyes, and the contrast between the patinated raw wood and the kaolin-whitened scarifications give it a lot of character. Note a repair at the chin. Total height with stand 25 cm.
