PENDE Malade mask
African Malade illness mask. Recognizable by the asymmetrical facial features. Crooked mouth and nose and one eye closed. Illness was the Pende often seen as a punishment imposed by the spirits of ancestors. By dancing with the masks they reassured the spirits and they warned the community to observe the rules and responsibilities. Good condition, no restorations. Back has a lip for hanging on the wall.
