Western Asiatic Black Hardstone Ceremonial Mace Head

A Western Asiatic ceremonial macehead, carved from striking black hardstone. The macehead has a tapered shape with a convex top leading to a conical body with a flattened base with a hollow shaft channel running through the centre of the piece. Earthly encrustations are visible across the exterior as well as a fine grey residue coating the interior of the channel. A macehead may have been mounted on a shaft as a symbol of rank, perhaps a derivative from a weapon of similar form. Throughout the ancient world, maceheads varied significantly, and we know of a great number with different styles and decorations. Maceheads may not only have served a purpose in warfare, but also in religious contexts. Indeed, maceheads played an important role as votive offerings in shrines and temples across ancient Mesopotamia. Measurements: Height~8cm, Width~6cm Provenance: Acquired in the 1980s-1990s. Property of a North West London gentleman.
