ROMANTIC LATE NAPOLEON 111 BED LINEN WITH LILY OF THE VALLEY FLOWERS. - Textile - 3.60 m - 2.20 m

This is a very excellent and well conserved bed linen going back to the early 20th Century. At the time large dowry's ( trousseaux in French) were prepared by both the wedded families. If for any reasons they could not meet the final date of the marriage even local Sisters of a particular order would be called in to finish the trousseaux. They had years of practice of embroidering religious vestments ,altar cloths, curtains and other Presbytery clothing. In all the years linen has gone through my fingers this is only the second bed linen with lily of the valley flowers and it is such a romantic bed linen and so beautifully "Choreographed". The design continues at the sides with 70cm with yet another Lily of the valley design. The initials B.P. are embroidered in high relief and are clearly visible on the bed. There are 2 rows of large open "thread work" . PLEASE NOTE: I have glued a small green arrow at the end of the bed linen where it appears that there is one vertical cord missing. Please see last photo. Also and at the factory 60cm was added at the bottom of the bed linen. This could not have been done at home in case of a repair as it needed special machinery to make the cord. It looks like a "blind seam" but in cord. finish. My belief is that after the purchase of the bed linen the owners wanted a extension piece added as 3.60 length in the early 20th Century was exceptionally long. Furthermore it is the same linen. See the last photo but one.
