Ancient Roman, Empire Lead Roman lead votive Mirror

Due to custom regulations we can not ship outside the E.U. Please make sure you have an EU shipping address before bidding. Ancient Roman lead flat mirror, used for votive or ritual purposes. The reflective glass with lead foil surface was mounted centrally on a disc but is (as usual) no longer completely present. A double dotted border around the central disc with scrolling design. Complete with decorated handle, plain reverse side. Diameter: ± 39,2 mm Length: ± 67,6 mm The miniature size and softness of the lead material indicates this object was deliberately dysfunctional and had ritual or magical purposes. The colour and weight of lead is traditionally associated with the underworld and magic. A similar association can be found in lead curse tablets which were often folded, rolled or pierced. Some miniature mirrors, inscribed with Latin or Greek phrases (example 'Utere Felix') also point to a ritual or magical use. Condition: good condition, some fragments of the original glass still present. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images. Certificate of Authenticity available upon request (pdf-format).
