European Bronze Age Bronze Domed Boss Buckle (No Reserve Price)

A flower-shaped miniature bronze boss with a buckle fitting, dating to the European Bronze Age. The piece is likely a decorative fixture, with six circular pieces extending out from the central domed piece. On the concave reverse, a flattened piece of bronze is attached creating a buckle which could attach to fabric or a strap. The piece is in good condition with a green patina over the surface. Some areas of the bronze have become slightly rough, and some of the perforations are irregular in shape. Shield bosses were placed at the centre of round shields and were originally intended to deflect the blows to the shield. They become more elaborate over time and eventually become more of a decorative motif. Such shields have been largely recovered from European Bronze Age graves. Burial customs and grave goods were of great importance across Bronze Age Europe. It is in graves that many of the most impressive and interesting Bronze Age items have been found, as the Bronze Age saw a rise in individual graves which they filled with precious items. Measurements: L 3.3cm Provenance: Ex JL private collection, Surrey, UK
