Ancient Roman Stone Intact sculpture of esculapios, god of medicine. 43 cm H. - 43 cm
No. 84025779
No. 84025779
An ancient Near Eastern head carve from a white stone. The eyes are highly stylised, represented by concentric circles, sitting under arched eyebrows. The figure is wearing a headdress, with geometric patterns decorating its lower half. The details have been delicately incised. Some earthly encrustations remain on the surface, and some chips and scratches are visible to the surface as consistent with its age. The head would once have been part of a larger statue or composition. The piece is supplied with a custom-made stand.
Statuettes with depictions of this type have been recovered across different cultures in Antiquity, usually portraying worshippers and deities. Such artefacts might have been used as votive offerings.
