The Imposter was first released in the U.S. in March 1944, then in France in 1946, a year after the Allied liberation of France. When first broadcast on American television, the film was titled Strange Confession. L'Imposteur was Jean Gabin's second film shot in the United States, after La Péniche de l'amour. Gabin had decided to flee Nazi-occupied France for the American continent. As well as being about the redemption and judgement of a man whose conduct redeems his past sins, the film is also a propaganda piece, designed to popularise the image of the French troops who remained loyal to De Gaulle among the American public.
