Pyromorphite (on quartz-galena breccia) - Saint-Salvy mine, Montagne Noire, France - Height: 10.6 cm - Width: 8.5 cm- 200 g

Watch a video of this specimen by following the Vimeo link below: https://vimeo.com/944040593 Saint-Salvy is one of the three major pyromorphite deposits in France, along with Les Farges and Chaillac. It reached an international reputation in the 1980's, when sprays of acicular green pyromorphite on matrix were found. Green pyromorphite rapidly became the 'green gold' of miners, however the alteration zone it was found in was not an ore target for the mining operations. The mine shut down in 1993 without providing any actual new find. Here is a beautiful quality specimen of pyromorphite displaying two different generations of pyromorphite: thin acicular tufts evolving towards thicker green tapered crystals. The pyromorphite tufts are scattered over a quartz-galena silcified breccia. A French classic!
