Benin - Nigeria (No Reserve Price)

An Aquamanile Ram in the style of Benin, a container that was filled with water through a small opening on the forehead. The water was poured out through the animal's mouth. The locking mechanism is fragmentary. The lid is missing and all that is left is the small handle on the top of the head, depicted with upright ears. The downwardly curved horns and the mane on the arched chest are particularly finely worked out. His strong appearance is a sign of power and pride. It was probably Oba Esigie 1504 - 1550 who introduced these drinking vessels - mostly rams - to the court. The Benin Aquamanile-Ram in the British Museum (last photo sequence), which was probably restored in the 1960th and 1970th.
