Plaque - Benin - Nigeria (No Reserve Price)

A fragmentary Benin-style panel with two Portuguese holding hands, one taller, the other shorter, both wearing the same clothing consisting of a skirt and a long-sleeved top, the taller figure holding a sword and wearing a helmet that exudes a sense of strength and authority. In contrast, the smaller figure, also dressed in a skirt and long-sleeved top, carries a modest bag, perhaps symbolising a different role or status within the composition. The background is decorated with a floral print, and the edges of the plate are marked by double braided flanges; condition report: several cast bubbles (Lunker), defects and cracks broken through by oxidation. Certificate of provenance. Kate Ezra, Perls collection, 1992, The MET NY, page 128 ff (last photo sequence).
