Ancient Chinese, Tang Dynasty Terracotta Guard Statuette (No Reserve Price)

A finely hollow-moulded terracotta Chinese Tang period statuette of a male, possibly a guard. He is wearing a mid-length tunic with elbow-length sleeves, tied at the waist. He also wears a hood-like headpiece tied below his chin. His one arm is held to the side and the other hand to his abdomen. There is a perforation to the hand, which would possibly have once held a staff-like weapon, or used for offerings, such as incense. His face has been carved with high precision, with his eyes, nose, and mouth carefully detailed. Traces of the original orange and black pigmentation are still visible to the body and feet. Some chips and scratches to the surface as consistent with its age. Grave goods were an important status symbol in ancient China, so the affluent and important would be accompanied in their travels through the afterlife with numerous depictions of people, items and animals. Such terracotta figures were made for the service and entertainment of the owner, ensuring that their journey in the underworld was a happy one. Measurements: H 16.5cm x L 3.6cm x W 4.5cm Provenance: Private UK collection. Catawiki disclaimer: This piece has been dated based on style and patina. No further tests, such as, a TL test, an analysis of pigments or radiography scans have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
