Attie - Côte d'Ivoire (No Reserve Price)

A female Attie sculpture, Lagune region Est, village bonoein, Ivory Coast. The statue is sitting on a stool, standing straight, small damaged boxy feet lead to bulbous calves and thighs, tubular abdomen with protruding navel that is flanked by two medicinal points, conical breasts protrude at a downward angle, up stretched, segmented arms hold a barrel-like container on an oblong horizontal head with woven hair. Five medicinal points are placed on an oval flat face, one on the sculpted, tow on the sides of raised oval slitted eyes, two on either side of the cheeks; thick encrusted patina, the feet are missing, a large crack at the bottom of the stomach, smaller cracks through out. “The eastern coast of the Ivory Coast comprises an area of lagoons, where the population is divided into twelve different language groups. ... Before colonization, each village was autonomous and, when threatened, they united to form a ‘confederation’. Unusually, these people are not governed by chiefs, although a man’s social position is determined by his age.” Baquart, Jean-Baptiste. Lit.: Baquart, Jean-Baptiste. The Tribal Arts of Africa. New York: Thames and Hudson Inc. 1998.
