The Mammitid Ammonites are a subclass of extinct cephalopod mollusks belonging to the order Ammonoidea. They lived in the ancient Tethys Sea during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, approximately 166-72 million years ago. These marine creatures had distinctive spiral shells, often characterized by elaborate surface ornamentation. Mammitid ammonites varied in size, with some species being quite small while others reached considerable dimensions. Like many other ammonites, Mammitids used their buoyancy chamber to regulate the depth of the water they inhabited, and they are presumed to have had similar lifestyles to other ammonites, being active predators in the marine food chain.
