"Even before the world-famous Magnum agency was founded in 1947, one of its future founding fathers, the legendary Robert Capa, travelled through China. In the late 1930s, he reported on the Japanese invasion that plunged the long isolated and now civil-war-torn giant empire into one of its many bloody conflicts of the 20th century. When Henri Cartier-Bresson arrived in China 10 years later, Mao Zedong had already entered the political arena: On 1 October 1949, he proclaimed the People's Republic of China - which was to have profound consequences not only for the country itself, but also changed the entire world order in the long term. Since the first journeys of Capa and Cartier-Bresson, Magnum photographers have accompanied China's political, economic and social development. In pictures that went around the world, they followed what was probably the most radical process of change of an entire nation in history. Magnum China documents this process in four chapters with over 350 images by the most famous Magnum photographers and explanatory historical texts - an impressive chronology of China's dramatic path over the last 80 years from the backward multi-ethnic state to Mao's communist revolution and the first steps towards opening up after his death in 1976 to today's global player with claims to world power."
