Thomas SAUVIN - 雙喜 Double Happiness - 2018

雙喜 Double Happiness Thomas SAUVIN Jiazazhi Press/2018/53 x 83 x 21mm Until Death Do Us Part" is about the tobacco culture practiced at weddings in China. Although it doesn't seem to be done much anymore, in northern China, especially in Beijing in the 1980s, it was customary for the bride to light the cigarettes of the men who attended the ceremony as a gesture of thanksgiving. The bride and groom also engage in a sort of silly cigarette-smoking game afterward. This film is a tribute to a tradition in which love and (cigarette-induced) death go hand in hand. The cigarette box contains the book by removing the contents of cigarettes, which are very commonly sold in China. The word "joy and happiness" written on the cigarette box is a word of good luck. Perhaps you have seen it in Chinese restaurants. Red is also used as a color of happiness in China. This is despite the fact that tobacco is said to be bad for the body. The photographs in this book were collected by the Beijing Silvermine project, a collection of over 500,000 photographic negatives collected over the years from recycling factories in the suburbs of Beijing.
