Highlights from this week’s comic auctions

Comics expert Jacques Pels selects several highlights from our comic auctions. This week, an auction for charity, a rare Willy Vandersteen comic and Lucky Luke’s first appearance in the Netherlands.


Four highlights from this week's comic auctions

1. Dylan Dog - Original illustration - Ink and watercolour - 42x29 cm - Loose page (2018)

Comics for charity! All proceedings of our special Original Artwork Area Performance Lucca Comics & Games auction go to the Emergency'  association, which is an organization that helps victims of war and poverty. In this auction, you can find original artwork from some of world’s best-known comic artists and illustrators. All works were made during Europe’s largest comic festival; Lucca Comics & Games. One of the highlights of this auction is an original Dylan Dog illustration, created by Italian comic artist Maurizio di Vincenzo.


2. Tijl Uilenspiegel #1 – De Opstand der Geuzen - Softcover - First edition - (1954)

Willy Vandersteen is probably most known for his popular comic series Suske en Wiske (Spike and Suzy in English), but did you know that he published over 1000 comic albums and worked on more than 25 comic series? In this week’s Vandersteen auction you can find a true classic of this creative Belgian mind; a first edition of Tijl Uilenspiegel in very fine condition, which is extremely rare for such a fragile album.


3. Gibrat – Le Vol du Corbeau - #1 & #2 - Including box and two dedication drawings - First edition - Signed (2002/2005)

Jean-Pierre Gibrat is one of the greatest realistic comic artists who gained much of his popularity through his mastery of direct colour, which perfectly suits his stories. In this week’s French Comic auction, you can find a beautiful first edition diptych of Le Vol du Corbeau including two beautiful original dedication drawings.


4. Lucky Luke #1 – Dick Digger’s Goudmijn - Softcover – First edition - (1949)

Did you know that Lucky Luke first started out as a comic series that parodied the western genre? The series quickly gained popularity and grew to be one of the best-selling comics series in Europe. Lucky Luke’s first album to ever appear in the Netherlands was ‘Dick Digger’s Goudmijn’, which was published in 1949. You can find this rare album in fair condition in this week’s Dutch Comic auction
