Primitive Currency in Iron - Sengese/Matakam - Cameroon
Provenance: private collection, France.
Dimensions: 39 x 16 cm.
In traditional African art, we can observe a great variety of so-called “primitive” currencies. Most of these are in black iron, others are in copper, considered as more valuable than gold, brought back by the Portuguese. More rarely, other materials could also be used. Each ethnic group usually has its own style, but the forgers had a certain freedom regarding their creativity for the creation of these pieces of tribal art. Some iron objects were used as currencies, but also as throwing knives or swords of prestige.
These primitive currencies in iron were used for the barter between tribes or individuals on diverse occasions.
