A lance (Lat. lancia) is a thrust or stab weapon.
The stab or thrust lance is derived from the spear and developed for use by the cavalry.
Unlike the spear, the lance is never thrown.
The lance is a weapon mainly associated with knights, who used the lance as a battle weapon as well as for tournaments.
The lances used as a combat weapon for warfare were sharp (to pierce the opponent's chain mail) and well-balanced for one-handed use.
