¶ Philips of Marnix, Lord of Saint-Aldegonde, Lord of West-Souburg (Brussels, 1540 - Leiden 1598) was a Southern Netherlandish writer, diplomat, scholar and counsellor to William of Orange.
Marnix was burgomaster of Antwerp during the siege and the fall of Antwerp in 1585. The Dutch national anthem Wilhelmus van Nassouwe is ascribed to him.
“De Bijenkorf” is his most famous work. A satirical rather than argumentative writing, undated, published under the fictitious name of Isaac Rabbotenu. Afterwards he developed it further in French into the 1500-page ‘Tableau des differens de la religion’.
