François Pompon (1855 - 1933).
Pompon was born in Saulieu in French Burgundy, his father was a cabinetmaker. At the age of 15, he worked for a funeral business in Dijon (France), where he learned the basics of the sculpture. He attended the evening classes at École des Beaux Arts.
His real breakthrough only came at the age of 67 with the "L’ours Blanc" exhibition (plaster at the Salon des Artistes Français). Then, he successfully exhibited in Tokyo and Osaka. His famous plaster bear was then realised in marble. The Museum of St. Omer bought some of his artwork and in 1929 the polar bear obtains a place in the Museum of Luxembourg. The bear is currently exhibited at Musée Orsay in Paris.
These statuettes are new, in their case, along with the booklet and certificate of authenticity.
