Medal Floris V
Moneyer Jan I 1296-1299
Mint place: Dordrecht.
Jan was born in 1284 as the son of Count Floris V and Beatrijs van Vlaanderen. After Floris V was murdered in 1296, Jan succeeded his father as count of Holland. In 1297 he married Elisabeth van Rhuddlan, daughter of the English king Edward I. The count was too young to rule independently and was initially under the influence of Jan III of Renesse and a little later under the influence of Wolfert I van Borselen. On 1 August 1299 Wolfert was murdered in Delft and the Dutch cities appointed Jan van Avesnes on 27 October 1299 as regent of Jan I for a period of 5 years. Two weeks later Jan I died of dysentery at the age of 15. There were no descendants and the Dutch House died with him.
