This depiction is a classic amongst the school posters. Here we see how Willem Barentsz and van Heemskerk, in an attempt to find a northeast passage to India. Stranded at Nova Zembla and got stranded in the sea ice with his ship. He had to spend the winter of 1596 there and of the 17 crew members only 12 returned in the spring. From the wreckage of the broken ship they built the "safe house" The poster was issued by Wolters Groningen in the 1940s/50s and was drawn by illustrator Isings.
