Georges Van Ruymbeke, alias Georges Van Ruy, was born on January 2, 1941, in L'Omme in the North. "All-rounder artist! In my great immodesty, I claim this title. I consider myself to be a bulimic of various artistic experiences and practices. I am eager to put my nose in every corner of plastic creation. What could be more exhilarating than to try a new approach to an art form that presents itself at the turn of life? I have never been able to resist it, and so much the worse for the grumblers who would like to confine me in the straitjacket of a single practice, in a single identifiable, reassuring style. It is said that consistency makes style. My own is to continually question it, to interrogate it, to confront it with new techniques and forms of expression. It is also to question my approach to the subject by imposing new rules of the game. Painting is for me a question of "point of view", not of opinion, not of idea. Either I grasp the model from the inside, at which point I don't know where and how I'll get out, if I'll get the outline. Either I tackle it from the outside. The human eye is limited. It can only focus on one point in space. If we play the game of perception, we are subject to real distortions. Each subject thus brings a clean reading and brings in my painting a change of style that often baffles the public. First of all, I proceed by accumulation. I impose a set of constraints by colours, materials, limited tools, applied to each of these series and in a constant format. This is in order to create a real variation. If I am satisfied with the result, this work sometimes results in a single painting, a bit like the synthesis of these experiences. This allows me to complete a cycle and especially not to settle into a know-how that would only lead me to a copy of myself. "The artist who finds himself, gets lost," Max Ernst once said.
