This is a Yuusai vase called Kabin by Shinkai Kanzan. Shinkai Kanzan (1912–) Shinkai Kanzan was a Japanese ceramic artist who was active from the Meiji period to the early Showa period, working in Kyoto and Nara. He produced excellent works using glazing techniques, and he was known for his artistic skill and technical prowess. Born in Kyoto Prefecture, his real name was Kunitaro. He came from a family with a long tradition in pottery, with his grandfather being the third generation Seifu Yohei and his uncle being the fourth generation Seifu Yohei. After graduating from the Craft School, he first entered the Teiten exhibition in 1930. Until before the war, he continued to be selected for exhibitions such as Teiten and Shinbunten with works mainly in sometsuke (blue and white porcelain). In 1948, he returned to Japan and began to focus on pottery and research on clay, mainly exhibiting at the Nitten exhibition. In 1951, he received the Special Selection at the 7th Nitten exhibition, and in 1958, he was recommended as a member. In 1974, he received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Award at the 6th restructured Nitten exhibition, and in 1980, he received the Japan Art Academy Award for his work "Gentori" exhibited at the previous year's Nitten exhibition. In 1984, he received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, and in 1989, he received the Special Achievement Award at the Kyoto Prefectural Culture Awards, among many other awards and honors. Initially, his works were mainly in sometsuke (blue and white porcelain), but after switching to pottery, he developed his own profound works using various techniques such as iron glazing, coloring, nail carving, pottery carving, and inlay, with simple designs of fish, birds, and animals.
