Giorgio Ghisi (1520-1582) after Teodoro Ghisi (1536-1601) - Angelica and Medoro
Fine 17th-century impression on laid paper.
This striking engraving, probably after a now lost painting by Teodoro Ghisi, Giorgio's brother, is thought to be the first depiction of an episode from Ariosto’s "Orlando Furioso". In Ariosto's poem, Orlando’s madness is precipitated when his beloved, the Princess Angelica of Cathay, falls in love with the page Medoro. The immensely popular poem, first published in 1532, existed in over one hundred Italian editions by the end of that century.
