Introduced to Japan from China in the 7th century, it reached its zenith during the Edo period (17th-18th century). While traditionally made from bamboo, modern versions are also available in ABS and hardwoods. Historically, it was utilized by the monks of the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism in the practice of suizen.
