Full title:
Bibliotheca Americana : A dictionary of books relating to America, from its discovery to the present time. Begun by Joseph Sabin, continued by Wilberforce Eames and completed by R. W. G. Vail for the Bibliographical society of America.
General description:
Known simply as "Sabin," this colossal, multi-generational effort aimed to include a reliable reference to every printed item ever published, no matter in which language, on something American from ca. 1500 up to "the present day," i.e. the early 1900s. Said to contain ca. 65,000 references covering North, Central, and South America and the West Indies (so not merely what is now United States!).
It means you may find an 18th-century Dutch book on North-Atlantic whaling and a 19th-century catalogue of the Connecticut Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa; a booklet on the 1837 constitution of the "Society for Detecting Horse Thieves" in a particular area of Massachusetts and the sole remaining copy of a Spanish history of the conquest of the "Reyno de Chile" published in Lima in 1630.
Material description:
29 vols. in 15 parts (complete), totalling approximately 17,000 pages. Note that this is the unchanged reprint published in 1961-1962 by N. Israel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Red-brown cloth, without dustjacket (as issued).
Condition: (Very) good. Some signs of use on some volumes, including perhaps one or more smudges, water spots, bumped corners or minor wear on a hinge (see photos). Some minor damage to the bottom back of the first two volumes (see photos). To all appearances the insides are fresh and clean and as clear as new. Overall a very good set. Photos are part of the description.
Added: Frederick R. Goff's "Joseph Sabin, Bibliographer (1821-1881)," the 1963 New Year's gift by N. Israel (as indicated by loose, inserted card). Paper covers, 30 pages. Condition: Good; some discoloration (see photos).
Note that this is a very heavy and bulky set. The books alone weigh ca. 15kg and so while shipping is possible, pick-up in Amsterdam is strongly preferred. Shipping may/will require a degree of coördination and coöperation between buyer and seller.
