Woodblock reprints - 'Autumn Moon on the Tama River (Tamagawa shugetsu)’ & Seba - Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Japani (Ei pohjahintaa)

Woodblock prints - Paper - Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), Japan - Mid 20th century The fronds of a large willow tree hang over the banks of the Tama River, while two fisherman and further silhouetted figures cast their nets and rods in its waters. Tall reeds are depicted swaying in the wind, and to the distance the thatched roofs of village dwellings are nestled among a dense forest of pine. A pale harvest moon hovers above the shadowy mountain ridges, partially covered by the fronds of the willow. Seba ; The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido (Kisokaido rokujukyu tsugi no) Two good impressions on thin paper. A later printing. In 1832, it is said that Hiroshige was appointed by Bakufu, the feudal government of Japan, to accompany an official procession from Edo to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. The artist made many sketches during this journey, resulting in the production of his most acclaimed series ‘Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road’, although some of the designs are based on older available images. To be noted that it was rare for an artist (and regular people in general) to be able to travel and sketch landscapes from life during the Edo period, which makes some scholars believe that Hiroshige depicted most scenes entirely from his imagination. Condition is good. Some surface dust.
