Bernard Larsson - Die ganze Stadt Berlin - 1964

BREATH-TAKING, HIGHLY UNDERRATED German photobook by Bernard Larsson, assistant of William Klein in Paris - about the DEVIDED BERLIN. Bernard Larsson is also responsible for the BRILLIANT LAYOUT. MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION. Manfred Heiting, Thomas Wiegand, Deutschland im Fotobuch, page 232. Welcome to the "GERMAN PHOTOBOOKS" auction by Ecki Heuser (5Uhr30.com, Cologne) - with more than 100 fantastic lots. IF YOU WIN MORE THAN 1 OF MY BOOKS IN THIS AUCTION, YOU WILL PAY ONLY 1 X SHIPPING COSTS - WORLDWIDE. "Bernard Larsson, Die ganze Stadt Berlin is a snapshot of Berlin in the early 1960s. Larsson's photographs paint a dense and vivid picture of the divided city. As the subtitle - Politische Fotos - announces, Larsson's images are intended to make a political statement, effectively re-unifying Berlin. His images express the deep desire of a nation to live as one. Though not outspokenly so, this could easily be considered a protest book. Bernard Larsson was William Klein's assistant in Paris for over two years during the late 1950s. Klein's influence is clearly visible, particularly in the photographs of children playing. Larsson mixes classic documentary style photography with bolder images and a more progressive photographic language. A valuable historical document and a fine example of a street photography classic. The book is divided into the following chapters: Michel Butor, Zweifacher Blick. Ausgangspunkte einer Reise. Die Mauer (The wall). Erster Mai (1st of May). Alltag. Kleider (Clothes). Unterbrechungen des Alltags. Schatten der Vergangenheit. Die Priviligierten. Der Große Verkauf. Published in 1964 by Nannen-Verlag GmbH Hamburg as part of a series (ostensibly intended as Christmas presents, rather than for commercial sale) by the German newspaper Die Zeit. The series ran to only three publications, distributed in the following order: Bernhard Larsson's Die ganze Stadt Berlin in 1964, William Klein's Moskau in 1965, and Klein's Tokio in 1966." (Andreas Bitesnich, Achtung Photography) Nannen, Hamburg. 1964. First edition, first printing. Paperback. 216 x 298 mm. 208 pages. 151 photos. Photos: Bernard Larsson. Layout: Bernard Larsson. Text: Michel Butor. Translation of the text from French into German: Helmut Scheffel. Text in German. Condition: Inside excellent, fresh and clean with no marks and with no foxing. Outside fresh with little trace of use; rear side excellent, front partly sunned, neat tear at the top of the spine (easily to restore). Overall fine condition. Fantastic photobook - here in the scarce paperback variant.
