Francien Krieg - Gloved gauntlet
The unusual portraits by Dutch artist Francien Krieg depict women at an age when most people would rather cover up than expose themselves. Also, because many works from her "Precious Bodies" series are painted in larger-than-life format, looking away is nearly impossible. Every wrinkle, every wound inscribed by life on the portrayed models is visible. And yet, they literally present themselves shamelessly to their observers. Astonishing! Who dares to do something like this?
Becoming visible again "I was surprised myself that none of the women I approached struggled with my concept of representation," the artist recalls. Many of the portrayed women even approached Francien Krieg themselves and wanted to be part of the series. For them, the open approach to their bodies was an important step in confronting the natural process of aging and the associated fears. Some had undergone a significant experience, such as breast cancer, and found new strength during the sessions in the artist's studio. At the same time, they enjoyed escaping the invisibility of aging through this process.
"Some viewers find my paintings ugly or even disrespectful towards older women," Francien Krieg says. "But each of my models can look back on a unique life journey, and I made it my mission to show their beauty." And that's exactly what she did. She didn't want to smooth the appearance of the portrayed, nor did she distort it for cheap shock effects. With an unyielding yet loving gaze, she painted what she saw: women with a unique history and a life achievement that left recognizable traces. Those painted in this way do not feel exposed but perceived and valued as human beings.
At first, gallery owners were skeptical. "Back then, I was often asked if I didn't want to create works that are easier to sell," Francien Krieg recalls. But she remained true to her theme. "I felt a strong urge; I knew that these portraits simply had to be made." In the end, it was precisely this series of paintings that established Francien Krieg's reputation as an internationally sought-after artist. Today, her works are represented in many European and American museums and collections.
