One World
This retrospective survey of the career of René Burri is the third volume in the series "Schweitzer Photographie." As a Magnum photographer since the mid-1950s, Burri has produced portfolios on the Germans, the Gaucho, Le Corbusier, Japan, Jerusalem, China, and Chicago. His assignments have taken him all over the world, covering war and peace, commercial portraiture and landscape. The evolution of his vision has been consistent, beginning with strong but straight photojournalism and culminating in disturbing juxtapositions of his collages with recent color work.
Die Deutschen
In 1962 Robert Delpire of Paris published Swiss-born René Burri's little known classic Les Allemands. This volume bore a striking resemblance to Les Americains by fellow Swiss Robert Frank, also published by Delpire three years earlier. The two books were nearly identical in layout and general format, and the photographic sensibilities at work remarkably similar. This new German language monograph on Burri's work incorporates the images from Les Allemands as well as many more made in Germany between 1957 and 1964. A fascinating volume, especially for anyone interested in photography as a method of social criticism.
