A very RARE and beautiful set of "The History of Freemasonry: Its Antiquities, Symbols, Constitutions, Customs, Etc. Derived from Official Sources throughout the World". Published by John C. Yorston around 1880/1890 is a milestone for people interested in Freemasonry. This history has become a standard work for Freemasonry since its first appearance at London, 1883-7. Gould was the Past Senior Grand Deacon of England. He and several other Masonic Historians initiated here the "authentic school of Masonic research", founded, oddly enough on research and evidence, and not on fanciful imaginings of previous writers. Profusely illustrated with full-page portraits of Masonic celebrities superbly engraved expressly for this work. Also engravings of masonic marks, medals, architecture, events, documents, and other facsimiles (each still protected with protective tissue leaves). Book in very good to fine condition in my opinion. Inside CLEAN, COMPLETE, engravings with tissue guards- there are a few missing in volume 3- . Externally bright gilt on boards and spine, light wear around edges and corners, shelfwear, binding a little shaky especially on vol 4, all pages attached. RARE to find in this beautiful clean condition.
