Nobuyoshi Araki - Photo Theater Tokyo Elegy - 1981

Nobuyoshi Araki, a Japanese photographer, has published over 400 photography books from the 1960s to the present day. Araki is not simply an "artist" in the formal sense; he is a "photographic artist" who has continuously explored new frontiers of art through his "free," "unconventional," and sometimes "carefree" approach to photography. His body of work, which includes nude photography and emotionally rich snapshots employing various techniques, has been provocative and has often sparked controversies. However, such controversies are emblematic of Araki's ongoing struggle with art. This book, published in 1981, holds significant importance among his early to mid-career works. The included photographs were taken between 1967 and 1972, revolving around the concept of "death" following the passing of his father, Chotaro. These images explore the fiction surrounding various events that occurred in the wake of his father's death (documentary). They represent the true essence of Nobuyoshi Araki's photography and serve as a cornerstone in photography theory (realism). Through its unique arrangement and flow of photographs, the book transforms photography into a visual spectacle, akin to a theater. It is a portrayal of Araki's personal photography and his personal landscape. Scheduled to be published by Shashin Hyoronsha, this book, along with Daido Moriyama's masterpiece "Sayonara, Photography," published in 1972, finally saw the light of day a decade later. Complete with an obi.
