The Songye are one of the larger ethnic groups in southeastern Congo; the population numbers fluctuate so much that an estimate is hardly possible, especially since there is ethnic overlap with the surrounding tribes. But it is probably a size beyond 150,000 relatives. The origin of the tribe is believed to be in the Shaba province, from where the Songye immigrated to today's area in the 16th century. There are cultural and linguistic similarities primarily with the neighboring Luba. Both tribes have, among other things, the Kifwebe society or the Kifwebe secret society in common, as well as the myth of the original Kongolo ancestor.
