Never framed, never exposed. - Size: 97 x 97 cm - Andy Warhol, born as Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died on February 22, 1987, was an American visual artist, film director, and producer. He was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement and is considered one of the most important American artists of the second half of the 20th century. His works explored the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s. Warhol’s art was a major shift away from Abstract Expressionism, focusing instead on images and techniques taken from popular culture. He used a technique that simulated benday screening (a dot pattern used by engravers), outlining areas of primary color with thick black lines. His work was both a critique and a celebration of popular culture, and he often used irony and parody in his pieces. Warhol’s artworks have been offered at auction multiple times, with prices that have reached up to 195,040,000 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting was for “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn”, which sold for a staggering 195,040,000 USD at a famous auction house in 2022. One of Warhol’s most iconic series is the Marilyn Monroe portfolio, a series of ten 36×36 inch silkscreened prints on paper, first made in 1967. All prints show the same image of the 1950s film star Marilyn Monroe but all in different, mostly very bright, colors. They were made five years after her death in 1962. The original image was taken by Warhol from a promotional still by Gene Kornman for Monroe’s film Niagara (1953). This series of prints highlighted Warhol’s fascination with celebrity culture and the concept of fame. Artists of similar importance: Basquiat, Hockney, Lichtenstein, Miro, Banksy, Brainwash, Delaunay, Nara, Soulages, Lagasse, Ramos, Lautrec, Klimt, Matisse, Hirst, Coa, Chagall, Koons, Haring, Indiana, Mondrian, Groening, Richter, Monroe, Kusama, Murakami, the beatles, rolling stones, carolina herrera, gucci, prada, calvin klein, christian dior, chanel, hermes, louis vuitton, loewe, Testa, Villemot, Oldenburg, Hopper, Ripolles, Wesselmann, Magritte, Jenk, Orlinski, Wille, Rizzi, Manara, Thiebaud, Cappiello, Rothko, Dalí, among others.
