Note: Tsuchiya Koitsu is a well-known artist of the Shin Hanga movement, but not among the trendy names like Hasui, Ito Shinsui or Natori Shunsen.
Tsuchiya Koitsu specialized in landscape images.
His beautiful prints are of excellent quality and a good buy for collectors of Japanese twentieth century prints.
What is drawn is the scene of the treaty (commonly called the Treaty of Shimonoseki) after the Sino-Japanese War.
On the left are the Qing ambassadors (Li Jingfang and Li Hongzhang)
On the right are (Munemitsu Mutsu and Hirobumi Ito)
Depicted in the center are the U.S. Ministers to Qing Denbigh and U.S. Ministers to Japan Dan, who acted as mediators at the time.
Tsuchiya Koitsu is known as a Shinhanga artists, but his earliest works started with ukiyo-e prints depicting the Sino-Japanese War.
There are not many Koitsu ukiyo-e works.
From the way he draws shadows, there are characteristics like those of Koitsu's Shinhanga.
Overall condition is very good.
Please have a look at the photos for details.
