Alfed Pizzy Newton (1830-1883) - A view in Greece

A fine watercolour by English artist and watercolour master, Alfred Pizzey-Newton, RWS (1830-1883). Titled ' A View in Greece', we think it is a view of the Pindus mountain range (known as the 'spine of Greece'), painted in the later stages of his life when, in ill-health, he visited Greece. It is a popular view and reproduced and sold by specialist art reproduction companies. This is the original, being purchased by George, 6th Duke of Argyll and passed down to his great grand-daughter Miss Francis Drummond. Subsequently it was sold by the Fry Gallery of Jermyn Street, London. See image 1g for the provenance. Pizzey-Newton's early works were painted mostly in the western Highlands of Scotland, and, as he happened to be painting the scenery near Inverlochy Castle, which was then occupied by Queen Victoria, he obtained her patronage. She selected him to paint a picture as a wedding gift to the Princess Royal in January 1858, and he also contributed some sketches in the area around Inverlochy Castle in Inverness-shire for the royal album of drawings. He was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1858, exhibited there extensively from 1855-81. He also exhibited a few pictures at the Royal Academy. On his death in 1883 and engraving was made of him for an article written about him in the Illustrated London News. The work is framed and glazed with a fresh mount. The frame size is 43x53cm. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
