EXILE-EDITION: Lion Feuchtwanger - Moskau 1937 - 1937
Lion Feuchtwanger's FIRST EDITION - PUBLISHED IN EXILE by Querido Verlag, Amsterdam in 1937.
Lion Feuchtwanger (1884 Munich–1958 Los Angeles) was a major German‑Jewish writer and one of the earliest and most outspoken critics of Nazism. His books were banned and burned in Germany, Due to personal persecution by the Nazis he had to leave Germany in 1933 to exile, eventually settling in Los Angeles, USA.
He is remembered for his moral courage, defense of democracy, and powerful portrayals of persecution and resistance.
"Moskau 1937" reflects Feuchtwanger's impressions during his visit to the Soviet Union at the height of Stalin’s Great Terror. Feuchtwanger's aim was to understand the USSR as a possible alternative to Hitler. In his book, he mistakenly accepts the Moscow show trials as genuine — a judgment shaped by limited information, political hope, and Soviet control over what he was allowed to see.
This controversial book is a revealing document of how even intelligent and educated observers can be misled by authoritarian systems.
Original softback binding with the original dust-jacket, designed by Denneboom.
Some wear on spine. Inside clean and fresh. A very good copy.
