Fujin Kiln Kuro Oribe Kutsuwa Chawan with Original Wooden Box

Description

This is a Kuro Oribe Kutsuwa Chawan (matcha tea bowl) from Fujin Kiln in the Mino pottery tradition.

The original wooden box is inscribed with “Fujin Kiln,” “Kuro Oribe,” and “Shochikubai (Pine, Bamboo and Plum).” The foot of the bowl also bears the kiln’s impressed seal.

The bowl features the characteristic slightly oval form of a Kutsuwa Chawan, offering a comfortable grip and a pleasing tactile feel. The gently undulating rim creates different expressions depending on the viewing angle.

The deep black glaze is boldly contrasted with white slip decoration and cobalt-blue botanical motifs. The striking combination of black, white, and indigo reflects the refined aesthetics of contemporary Mino pottery while preserving the traditional character of Kuro Oribe ware.

The interior is deep and smoothly finished, making it well suited for preparing and enjoying matcha. The carefully trimmed foot adds elegance and reflects the craftsmanship expected of a fine tea utensil.

Complete with its original signed wooden box, this piece is suitable for both tea ceremony use and as a collectible example of Japanese studio pottery.
