ABOUT THE ARTIST

Juan García Ripollés (born 1932), widely known as Ripollés, is a Spanish painter, sculptor, and printmaker celebrated for his vibrant, expressive, and highly personal artistic style. Born in Castellón, he is recognized for his colorful compositions, imaginative figures, and joyful visual language, drawing inspiration from nature, everyday life, and Mediterranean culture. In addition to his internationally acclaimed paintings and monumental sculptures, Ripollés has created an extensive body of graphic works, including lithographs and serigraphs, which capture the same spontaneity, bold color, and playful spirit as his original works. His art has been exhibited throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and his public sculptures are installed in numerous cities worldwide. Today, Ripollés is regarded as one of the most prominent and widely collected contemporary Spanish artists.

After Equipo Crónica dissolved in 1981, Valdés developed an independent career marked by a distinctive style that revisits iconic figures from artists such as Velázquez, Goya, Matisse, and Picasso. Rather than copying, he transforms these historical references through bold textures, simplified forms, and rich materials, including burlap, thick impasto, bronze, and aluminum.

Valdés is especially recognized for his large-scale sculptural heads, often displayed in major cities worldwide, which reinterpret classical portraiture with contemporary sensibility. His work has been exhibited internationally in museums and public spaces across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Through his dialogue with art history, Valdés has established himself as a major figure in contemporary figurative art.
