Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who became world famous for his intriguing, mathematically inspired works of art. With seemingly impossible constructions, infinite staircases and metamorphoses between forms, he managed to playfully challenge the laws of perspective and reality. Escher combined art and mathematics to create hypnotic patterns and visual puzzles that continue to fascinate viewers. His work reflects a unique blend of technical precision, creativity and philosophical depth. To this day, Escher inspires artists, scientists and enthusiasts worldwide.
The mastery of lithography by Escher is clearly visible in the print Three Spheres II. In this work, Escher demonstrates his remarkable ability to suggest different materials and surfaces using only black ink and subtle tonal gradations. Although the three spheres share the same simple form, each behaves differently in relation to light. The sphere on the left appears transparent and is partly filled with water, whose surface reflects and slightly distorts part of the surrounding environment. The sphere on the right has a matte surface that absorbs rather than reflects light, emphasizing volume through shadow instead of reflection. The central sphere functions as a highly polished mirror, reflecting the entire room around it. Within this curved reflection, Escher himself can be seen seated at his desk while working on the print, introducing a subtle self-portrait and drawing attention to the act of observation and image-making.
