Motel room mid‑afternoon. Seated on the armrest of a bottle‑green chair, a brunette with a pouffy hairstyle and a sleeveless white dress places the needle on a microgroove, a Miles Davis sleeve in hand, a pile of records at her feet. On the wall, a framed pop panel — a crying blonde face and a bubble of despair — comments on the scene like an ancient chorus. Through the bay window: the vertical sign “MOTEL / VACANCY”, a white convertible with fins, a clear blue sky. Semiotically, the painting superimposes three sign systems that say the same thing in different ways: the screaming pop image, the whispering music, the woman who is silent. The diamond of light projected on the wall cuts the gloom into two temporalities. Smooth and illustrative facture, palette of khaki, chalk white and deep green, punctuated by the red of the sign.
