Josef Steiner (1899–1977) - Landscape

Josef Steiner (1899–1977).

„Landschaft” (Táj).

Etching from 1926.
Signed and dated by the great German Expressionist artist.

In very good condition, carefully preserved; slight mark from light exposure; traces of adhesive on the reverse.

Sheet size: 27.0 x 32.5 cm.

Unlike the traditional, realistic landscapes of the 19th century, Steiner did not seek a photographic reproduction of nature. His trees and rivers possess a melancholic, introspective, and dramatic character. Like so many artists, following the rise of the Nazi regime, his work was classified as "degenerate art" (*Entartete Kunst*).
