Suzanne Van Damme (1901 - 1986) - Stilleven

During her youth in Oostende Suzanne Van Damme (1901-1986) was under the spell of James Ensor, but then followed a private, fanning out wide path. Her style developed from the lovely, figurative post impressionism about realism and unique surrealist creations to abstract material art on large format. London, New York, Paris In 1938 Ensor painted a portrait of her, entitled Peintres aux prises. In the piece Van Damme is holding a long paintbrush horizontally, and making a portrait of Ensor himself, in the bottom right there is a white steaming muse. The private oil painting attached with marouflage and can be exceptionally seen at this exhibition. Van Damme had already finished her studies at the academies of Ghent and Brussels and in the Studio L'Effort in Brussels. Then she moved to Paris to marry the five year younger poet-artist Bruno Capacci. Paris, the South of France, London and especially Firenze became her new home ports. After that she returned to Brussels several times, during the war years, and in the end of her life-she died in Ixelles. Van Damme showed at five exhibitions in the Palace for Fine arts (1932, 1938, 1960, 1965, 1969), at the exhibitions in New York, Dallas, Baltimore and Los Angeles (in the 1960s she was invited there yearly with Capacci), and at the World exhibitions in Brussels from 1935 and 1958. Even more important is her participation at the Biennale of Venice in 1935 and 1962 - the description from the time can also be seen in group 2. Her presence at the exhibition of the surrealists at the Galerie Maeght in Paris in 1947 meant her big break.
