Bronze sword from ancient Persia (about 1200 BC). It comes from the ancient Marlik culture of northwestern Iran. The crescent-adorned hand-guard has a ridge to contain an inlay of a material, usually wood, ivory or bone. The blade is triangular with a central rib. The patina is a mixture of green and brown with some interesting crystalline formations. The total length of this piece exceeds 44.5 cm. The total weight is 386 grams. For more information on similar types, see ‘Arms and Armor from Iran’ by Manoucher Khorasani, pp. 59 and 71). An almost identical piece is illustrated in Oscar Muscarella's ‘Bronze et fer’ page 102. Definitely one of the finest examples of this type of sword that can be found.
