Giuseppe Pastore - Scorcio

Giuseppe Pastore (1935-1999). From 1954 to 1960 he was part of the group of Venetian neo-realist painters. In this period he displayed his works in many solo and group exhibitions, including the annual exhibitions of Opera Bevilacqua La Masa where the most prestigious Venetian artists exhibited. He was a member and founder of “Associazione Veneta degli artisti figurativi”. In 1960 he left Italy to work as a painter and graphic designer in France, Switzerland, Germany and Finland. In 1962 he settled in West Berlin, where he added the work of painter to that of journalist and set designer. From 1964 to 1968 he was a permanent set designer at the Deutsches Theater in East Berlin, he collaborated with other German theatres (Maxim-Gorki-Theater and Berliner Ensemble) and with the Deutschen Fernsehfunk. In this period, on behalf of the Deutsches Theater and the Academy of Fine Arts of East Berlin, he promoted a collaboration with the Municipality of Venice for the organisation of the exhibition of works by Heinrich Kilger (Venice, 4-15 February 1967), the first official exhibition of an artist of the German Democratic Republic in Italy. He was a guest member (name for members from non-German countries) of the Association of Figurative Artists of the German Democratic Republic and collaborated with the “Rassegna Internazionale dei Teatri Stabili” of Florence. In 1970 he went back to Italy. From 1974 to 1999 he was responsible for the theatre of the Umbria Region. The work I am offering is from 1986. It depicts a deep and highly tactile view dominated by lights and shadows. The painting was purchased by me several years ago from the gallerist Roberto Ghelfi, who spent all his life searching for painters and have them known and appreciated by the large audience of art lovers and non-lovers. The work is part of my private collection and considered as a private sale. He died in Foligno on 20 July 1999.
