JORGE DE OTEIZA (Orio, Guipúzcoa 1908 - San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa, 2003) was a Spanish sculptor and poet. He is considered one of the greatest exponents of the Basque School of Sculpture.
The first international recognition of Jorge Oteiza's work was in 1951, in the Italian city of Milan, in whose IX Triennial of Art he received the diploma of honour.
With the experimentation inherited from constructivism, Oteiza embarks on what he calls his Experimental Purpose (1955), a title with which he is presented at the São Paulo Biennial (1957), where he obtains the extraordinary sculpture prize.
Oteiza is a bridge artist between the avantgarde period and the postwar generation, and reaches his influence in artistic, cultural and political sectors. He remained distant and critical of official recognition, always maintaining his particular iconoclastic position in the ideological and political.
